Did you know that almost every piece of health and safety legislation contains a requirement for employers to provide their workforce with appropriate training, information, instruction and supervision? This isn’t an option, it’s a legal requirement – no matter how small the business. However, it’s an often overlooked obligation which leaves the business open to accidents, financial loss and irreparable damage to reputation.
Your obligation to provide health & safety training doesn’t just apply to direct employees, but also anyone who’s working under the control of a business’s management team. This could include:
- Self-employed workers
- Voluntary staff
- Agency workers
It’s common sense that health & safety training will reduce both financial losses and missed opportunities that follow injuries and work related ill-health, bringing improvements to performance, quality and productivity. According to the Health & Safety Executive, a lack of or inadequate health & safety training is a key factor in the majority of incidents investigated by inspectors.
How can we help?
Our BusinessSafe team recognise the important role of good quality training in the effective management of health & safety, so we’ve developed a number of solutions to help you meet those legal obligations.
We can provide training that leads to recognised health and safety qualifications issued by the Institute of Safety & Health (IOSH) and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
IOSH courses available are:
- Directing Safely
- Managing Safely
- Working Safely
CIEH qualifying courses are:
- Fire Safety – Level2
- Control of Substances Hazardous to Health – Level 2
- Risk Assessment – Level 2
- Manual Handling Principles and Practice – Level 2
- Health and Safety Awareness – Levels 2 and 3
Courses coming up soon…
Our IOSH and CIEH courses are arranged to suit members’ needs, and are delivered as open courses at strategic locations around the country, or as in-house training at a member’s premises.
An open IOSH Managing Safely course is running in Bristol later this month – while this course is already fully subscribed, there are still places available on a similar course being held in Manchester during November. Another event is planned for early 2017 in Oxford.
If you’re interested in any of these training sessions, please call us on 0844 892 2785 and select option 3 for details.
Training for SMEs
We also appreciate that formally endorsed training isn’t needed by every business, so with small to medium employers in mind, we’ve also developed a series of half day training sessions:
- General Health & Safety Awareness
- Manual Handling Practice and Principles
- Fire Safety Awareness and Fire Warden Duties
- Risk Assessment
- Hazardous Substances
- Asbestos Awareness
These BusinessSafe training sessions offer practical solutions to help you meet your health & safety training responsibilities, and are all delivered by qualified, competent health & safety consultants who are also qualified trainers.
Apart from the IOSH and CIEH courses, which follow a set syllabus, all other training sessions can be adapted and delivered to meet the specific needs of your business, enabling you to maximise the value of the training.
We also have a number of short ‘Tool-box Talks’ (also referred to as Short Duration Training and Buzz Training). These are available in the reference library of BusinessSafe Online, from where they can be downloaded and, if necessary, adapted specifically to your activities before being delivered to workers by one your own management team. These short 10-15 minute sessions, specific to your work activities, are effective and valid training sessions. Be sure to maintain records of where, when and to whom they were delivered.
