An employment assistance programmes (or an EAP) are confidential services funded by employers to assist their staff with personal or work-related problems that could be affecting their job performance and wellbeing. As it has benefits for employers and employees, it represents a worthwhile, long-term investment. Employees have access to support without judgement, enabling them to prioritise their mental health, often during any point of the day thanks to 24/7 accessibility. Because staff have reduced days off because of improved mental health, businesses don’t have to contend with absenteeism. There are various methods of support and additional services available including financial support or occupational health services. Employers that offer an EAP should regularly promote EAP services. This goes along way with supporting existing employees, but it also helps attract new talent.
