A job reference is a statement generally given by a former employer or colleague that evidences a job applicant’s tenure. This will include the individual’s skills and character, and other key details like length of service. The main purpose is to help the new employer verify the provided information throughout the application process and make a decision regarding the prospective employee’s suitability for the role. There is no legal obligation for an employer to provide a reference, however, there may be exceptions if employment contract contains a written agreement. Employers must provide a fair and accurate reference. Information that’s misleading, even by omission, could result in legal claims.
