The Northern Ireland Executive has published its revised approach to easing restrictions during the course of 2021.

The aim of the Executive's 'Pathway out of Restrictions’ is to ensure that the reopening of the economy is a sustainable one that minimises the chances of imposing another lockdown.

The nine pathways

The strategy is divided into these nine pathways:

  • Home & Community
  • Education & Young People
  • Culture, Heritage and Entertainment
  • Sports and Leisure activities
  • Worship & Ceremonies
  • Travel & tourism
  • Work
  • Retail & Services
  • Hospitality

These nine pathways will move along a five-phase timeline towards reopening. Once a restriction is eased, the impact will be monitored for three weeks before deciding if moving to the next phase is safe. While no fixed dates are provided, the Executive has pledged to provide as much notice as possible to businesses that need to put reopening plans in place.

The Executive has also outlined that no significant changes will occur before Easter. A review on April 15th is the first time that any easing of restrictions will be considered.
