A new Bill, the Pregnancy Loss (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2025, was recently presented to Seanad Éireann for consideration. If enacted, this Bill would change how pregnancy loss is recognised in Irish employment law.  

The proposed legislation is in its very early stages of development, with the general principles being debated and discussed in the Seanad at present. There are multiple steps that new legislation must go through before being enacted, and this Bill is only at the beginning of that process.  

The Bill aims to provide leave for employees who experience pregnancy loss. It sets out the proposed durations for pregnancy loss leave, the right to pay during such leave, confidentiality requirements, and the requirement for employees to provide notice of pregnancy loss leave.  

The Bill also details the ways in which employment rights should be protected during pregnancy loss related leave.
