Damien English, Minister for Business, Employment and Retail recently approved an Employment Regulation Order (ERO) for the Security Industry. The new ERO provides for a new pay rate of €12.05 per hour for security workers that will apply from September 1st, 2021.
Meanwhile, the Connect trade union has made an application for a new Sectoral Employment Order (SEO) to set new pay rates and conditions in the electrical contracting sector.
Last year, the National Electrical Contractors Ireland trade association succeeded in having a previous electrical contracting SEO struck out on procedural grounds while the Supreme Court is also scheduled to deliver a judgment on the overall constitutionality of the SEO system.
Provided the Supreme Court judgment upholds the constitutionality of the SEO wage-setting system, there could soon be changes to pay and conditions in both the electrical contracting sector and the mechanical and engineering building services sector.
An SEO covering pay and conditions for about 10,000 plumbers and pipefitters is at an advanced stage and could also soon come into effect pending the Supreme Court’s decision.
