This employment law guide explores the basics of the Gender Pay Gap and offers guidance on how to avoid common pitfalls...

Employers are legally required by the Equality Act 2010 to provide equal pay to both men and women if their duties and work they do is the same or broadly similar. Paying them a different rate is unlawful. Regardless of the fact that there are laws in place to prevent unlawful pay differences between genders, a pay gap still exists today. In order to attempt to address this, the Government decided to introduce an obligation on employers to publish data on the salary of male and female employees. Specifically, employers will need to show what the gap is between male and female pay. Government consultation on closing the gender pay gap took place from 14th July until 6th September 2015.
