Now we’re heading into the summer months, you can expect your staff to be making use of their holidays.

Whether that means taking off on sunny getaways or enjoying a staycation, it’s a popular time to disconnect from work for a bit.

And with more bank holidays to come, are you ready to manage time off in your business? And have you made your company stance on public holidays clear to your employees?

Taking leave is good for wellbeing, so it’s always important to encourage your staff to take time off work. But at the same time, you also don’t want to be in a situation where you have multiple employees taking time off simultaneously – and you end up shortstaffed.

So if you do keep working over bank holidays or need to meet a staffing minimum, now is the time to make your holiday rules clear to your workforce.

Because you don’t want to find yourself in a stressful scenario. If you have multiple members of staff wanting to book time off around bank holidays, it’s important to navigate this with the right documentation and a fair process.

So this your reminder ahead of the next bank holidays and as we approach holiday season, to make sure you have a robust holiday policy that clearly lays out your rules for booking leave.

And let’s not also forget, watertight contracts that clearly lay out your worker’s entitlements.

Having clear holiday rules and being upfront about them can help you avoid complaints of unfairness if you have to reject a request. And it can also stop you from accepting more holidays than your business can handle. (HR software is a handy tool for helping you manage this too).
