The default retirement age and the statutory retirement procedure are no longer in use meaning that employers are no longer allowed to dismiss staff because they have reached the age of 65. The only way that a retirement age can be retained is if it is capable of being objectively justified. This reflects the fact that people are living longer, healthier lives and are productive well into their later years.
