Of all the different departments within Peninsula, Legal Services is the one that everyone hopes they never have to talk to. This isn’t because we’re not a friendly bunch or that we’re particularly frightening, although that one might be up for debate at times, but because we step in when the matter turns more formal and tribunals are involved. That said, the fact that we argue with people for a living might also account for some of the reluctance to talk to us. Sometimes tribunals cannot be avoided and that is when Legal Services will swing into action. In the last 12 months we brought 3252 matters to conclusion. Of those just over 87% were won or resolved without any adverse finding at Tribunal. We should point out that an adverse finding is not necessarily as bad as it sounds. Some cases where there is a recorded loss are only lost on some of the issues brought. For some it was always known that the case would lose on an aspect but the real issue was on the value and we have argued the figure right down while successfully defending the other issues. There were 2109 cases that included a complaint about dismissal, 906 different issues of discrimination were alleged and 747 monetary disputes, such as wages or holiday pay, were raised. Roughly a third of the cases we handled were for new clients who had an ongoing tribunal when they joined us and about two thirds of our work was for existing clients. In Legal Services we work with our clients to achieve the best possible result whether that’s fighting the case at hearing or achieving an appropriate settlement. We hope you never need us, but if you do then you know we are here to fight your corner. For any further information, please call our 24 Hour Advice Service on 0844 892 2772.
