Introduction

Lou Macari is a renowned former football player and manager, who is best known for playing over 400 games for Manchester United.

Now, he is the owner of the Macari Foundation, a homeless charity. The foundation aims to provide safe and secure shelter for homeless people in Stoke-on-Trent.

Here’s how he navigated a troubling legal claim with Peninsula’s support…

The situation

An employee had bought forward severe claims against the foundation – for discrimination and unfair dismissal.

While Lou knew the claims were false, he was concerned about how to navigate his next steps.

And with every penny going towards helping people in need, Lou was especially worried about the financial impact on the charity. With no idea how tribunal proceedings worked, it was a daunting experience.

When I was made aware that there was a claim against us...

...I had no idea what to do. I was concerned about the financial outcome; we’re a charity and there wasn’t a massive amount of money around at the time

What happened next

At the time, Lou was calling a law firm in London for employment law support.

With each call costing hundreds of pounds, it was eating away at the foundation’s essential funds. Thousands of pounds later, Lou still didn’t feel like he was progressing with the case or getting the support he needed.

So, on the advice of a trusted friend, he signed up to Peninsula for legal support.

As tribunal support is bundled in a low monthly fee, it was a “no brainer” to sign up.

How Peninsula helped

Unlike the solicitor’s film, Peninsula provided unlimited advice throughout the entire case.

Peninsula’s legal team quickly set to work and began piecing together a defence bundle for Lou. This included preparing evidence and witness statements.

During this process, a legal consultant at Peninsula identified that the claim had no merit. They also found that the claim wasn’t valid on a legal technicality.

Peninsula’s consultant sent a letter to the employee’s solicitor, stating that the claims were invalid.

After my second visit to Peninsula...

....I was a lot happier with things, and I was more confident that the outcome was going to be in my favour. I got a better feeling with a bit of support behind me

The outcome

Upon receiving the letter, the claimant withdrew the claim – before it got to tribunal.

This saved Lou the stress of having to defend his business in front of a judge.

As the claim was struck off, it also meant Lou avoided paying out the costly claim. This meant Lou could invest the money back into the charity, helping people who desperately need shelter.

But most of all, he was able to hold onto his good reputation, safe in the knowledge that he had acted within approved, legal guidelines the whole time.

The claim was withdrawn...

It was great when I got the news! And I had no idea that there was the possibility of winning it long before getting to court
